I went to a reading at a local bookstore. He read for 20 minutes (from “Wicked” and its sequel, “Son of a Witch”), answered questions, and signed a lot of books, including the three copies we got of his new book. He seemed like a very smart, funny and nice guy.

Because, as a friend of mine once said, she is a “deranged genius”. How else could she come up with shows like Miss Folk America, Jesus Has Two Mommies and The F Word?

My meeting Menino was entirely accidental and, after the fact, quite funny. I was in the middle of my first film project for BU, and was getting ready to do a shot of a parking meter. Parked next to it was a black SUV, but I didn’t pay very much attention to it, since I was busy setting up the camera and explaining the shot to the actress.

Then out of the corner of my eye I noticed someone approaching the SUV. I straightened up to see who it was, and found myself face to face with the mayor of Boston, with my camera pointing right at City of Boston property.

Fortunately, he must have realized I meant no harm, so he just made a joke (“I hope there’s nothing wrong with our meters!”) and went on his way. When I was able to start breathing again, I quickly did the shot, thanking my stars that I wouldn’t end up on that evening news broadcast.

He’s a staunch supporter of same-sex marriage rights, and played a key role in the defeat of a constitutional amendment that would have banned same-sex marriage in Massachusetts (the right to which was only granted in 2004).
